Caerphilly Town Centre – Community Led Traffic Monitoring

Overview:

We are inviting locals to be part of a new pilot project exploring how citizen-powered traffic monitoring can help understand traffic counts and movements in Caerphilly Town Centre, as well as longer term modal shift (where road users change from one type of transport to another – for example, from car to bicycle).

This project falls within the Caerphilly Placemaking Plan and is generally focussed on Caerphilly Town Centre. As such, we're inviting residents, businesses and organisations to trial hosting a small traffic monitoring device which can automatically count the number of cars, bikes and pedestrians that pass by (as well as seven other different road user types)

Study Area:

Map of Caerphilly Town Centre

Area 1 - this is the primary focus area, containing the streets and junctions most fundamental to the functioning of the town centre

Area 2 - the surrounding peripheral area containing many important residential communities and routes in and out

Area 3 - parts of the town that are generally outside of the town centre

Technical Requirements:

The sensors need to be installed indoors and are mounted on the inside of a window that looks out at the street. Generally, the technical requirements include:

• A clear view (no curtains, no shutters, no big trees etc.) of the street

• 1st / 2nd floor positioning so that there is a good vantage point

• Not too far from the street (max. +-15m)

• The camera needs to be aimed at the middle of the road

• Not near traffic lights or junctions

• No movement not related to traffic (e.g., banners, signs or flags)

• Have power from a nearby socket

Road users will be counted anonymously, and no identifiable images or videos are saved or transferred from the devices.

The data we are collecting is open to everyone and you will be able to see on the map approximately where the Telraam units are located (although not the specific address) and what the volume of cars, lorries, pedestrians and cyclists etc., is at any given time or date.
