Manchester School Streets Pilot

As part of a scheme funded by Transport for Greater Manchester, Manchester City Council and Walk Ride GM are supporting a number of schools to run a 6 month School Street street pilot.

A School Street is a road outside a school with restrictions on traffic at school drop off and pick up times on school days. The scheme helps children and families to walk, cycle or scoot to school safely during the term time, with the road becoming a temporary pedestrian and cycle zone. This is helping to tackle congestion, improve air quality at the school gates and make it safer to walk and cycle to school.

  • The 7 schools in the scheme are:
  • St Augustines CofE & Manchester Communication Academy - Harpurhey
  • St James CofE Primary - Rusholme
  • St Pauls CofE Primary -Withington
  • Our Ladys RC Primary & Manley Park Primary (Juniors) - Whalley Range
  • Brookburn Primary – Chorlton

During the pilot, activities will be carried out to monitor and evaluate the impact of the School Street, looking at whether more children are walking or riding and how traffic in the area has been affected. The outcome of these activities will help decide whether the School Street will become permanent after the pilot ends.

As part of this monitoring and evaluation, traffic volumes on the School Streets will be monitored using Telraam units, as well as on adjacent roads, to check whether nearby traffic has reduced or been displaced.

The data we are collecting is open to everyone and you can see on the map where the Telraam units are located and what the volume of cars, lorries, pedestrians and cyclists is at any given time or date.
